This critical situation led Hungary to nearly shut down its Paks nuclear power plant, which provides 40% of the nation's electricity, due to insufficient cooling water. Simultaneously, Romania resorted to controlled explosions in the Danube to divert water to its Cernavodă nuclear plant, which had already closed one reactor. The unprecedented low water levels also revealed dozens of World War II German battleships in the Danube near Serbia.
