Shattered peace, rising ash

Artist Lajos Kassák feels ominous by reading the news: On August 1, 2026, a Russian missile struck the Polish farming village of Tarnawa-Kolonia, approximately 80 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, marking the first time a Russian projectile detonated on NATO member soil during the conflict. No injuries were reported in Poland, though eight people died in Ukraine from the same barrage.
